Youth and Aviation Program

Friends of Lone Pine Airport is starting a Youth and Aviation Program for local high school kids. This project will be an opportunity for youth to build an experimental airplane. This year FLPA received the incredible donation of the SCAMP (Sierra Communities Aviation Mentorship Program) airplane build project, founded by Pastor Tony Unger.  FLPA seeks to build on their mission of building a Zenith CH650 aircraft with High School students aged 13 - 19 in an after school program.  Our long term goal is to create a certified CTE program through Coso College and Lone Pine High School, enabling students to earn both High School and College credits for their work.

In building a Youth and Aviation program, FLPA seeks to provide mentorship in pursuit of aviation knowledge, aviation training, and airplane mechanics. In addition to providing practical experience in the hands-on building of an airplane, this program will enrich participants' abilities in math, science, technology and engineering.  The program is also intended to foster social skills, self-confidence, reasoning and comprehension skills.  In short, this program has the ability to open doors for kids in the Owens Valley to the world of opportunities in aviation,  to present possibilities they may not have considered for themselves.

We welcome any donations for this program to make a huge difference for the youth of the Owens Valley.
